Marcelo Ferrer

Marcelo Ferrer is one of the many heroes in the community. Marcelo is a father of two. He loves to draw in his free time and also spend time with his family. He works with the Logan Square Neighborhood Association on Housing and Immigration. He stays motivated by making positive impacts in the lives of people.

Marcelo looks up to his dad. He thinks of him as his hero. Marcelo is inspired by Gandhi because of his belief in nonviolence and how he accomplished a lot without using violence. Marcelo thinks a hero is someone who sacrifices a lot. Marcelo thinks that we shouldn’t have to look for heroes because we are our own heroes. Marcelo is dedicated to his work in the community.

Marcelo began working at Logan Square Neighborhood Association twelve years ago. He worked at Mozart Elementary where he worked in the learning center. He helped get the learning center at Mozart started. Later on he started another learning center at Ames Middle School. Marcelo has been successful while working at LSNA.

Marcelo has accomplished many things while working at LSNA. His most recent accomplishment is a law that is close to getting passed that will help tenants in foreclosure. This law will allow tenants to remain in the building and the bank will not be able to kick them out. The point of the law is to keep a building from being vacant. “It’s never about your own personal goals and gains, although there’s personal satisfaction that you get from working with people on something,” Marcelo said. Marcelo thinks that the key to making the community better is by youth getting involved in their community.

Marcelo feels that youth should and could get involved in their communities through after school programs. He thinks that if high school students don’t see an afterschool program that interest them, then they should start their own club. Marcelo wants to make the world better for his kids and for us. “Maybe the world the world isn’t going to change in my time, but i have hope that maybe my kids might be able to help or even you guys” said Marcelo

I have learned so many things about Marcelo. One of the many things that I have learned is that he gives up a lot of his time to make the world better for us. I never knew how big a problem affordable housing and foreclosure was until i got the opportunity to interview Marcelo. Marcelo is a hero in my eyes because he never gives up and is very devoted to his job and community.
